Allardyce responds to Everton boss Silva swipe: It wasn’t personal!by Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Everton boss Sam Allardyce has responded to a swipe from Blues manager Marco Silva.Allardyce urged Silva to sway from his ‘attractive’ style of football after the Toffees suffered defeats to Brighton, Tottenham and Leicester over the festive period, prompting a backlash from his Goodison Park successor in a press conference.“I don’t expect him to listen to me!” Allardyce told talkSPORT.“I was generalising about Everton overall, I wasn’t having a pop at Marco Silva.“I was saying that in the end, look at the previous four managers of Everton, including myself – all of them have been dismissed for one reason or another.“Marco Silva hasn’t yet, but pressure on him will depend on where they are in the league and winning football matches.“The press man who asked the question probably didn’t put it how I said it in that interview.”Allardyce also remarked: “I think you play out from the back when it suits you, and if you doesn’t suit you, you don’t play out from the back.“Everton is the only place where results haven’t given me time to go and do a better job than I did last season.“At the end of the day, it wasn’t my team. I inherited that team.“I was doing the best I could with the tools I had available. Moving on from there, they’ve spent a lot of money again, and where will they end up this season? That’s building expectation by the amount of money they spent.“I think there’s only four players that played when I was there, all the others are new players that were brought in this season.“The players themselves have got to find out about each other as they play every week and maybe that’s why they aren’t getting the results that the Everton fans would expect.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Michigan State won 66-61. (Photo by Chris Chambers/Getty Images)Something needs to be done about Adam Woodbury, Big Ten. During the first half of Iowa’s game against Maryland Sunday afternoon, the Hawkeyes’ big man poked Terrapins’ freshman guard Melo Trimble in the eye. Trimble collapsed to the floor and had to leave the game for several minutes as his eye swelled up. No foul was called during the action, but the referees charged Woodbury with a Flagrant 1 after looking at the replay. It’s possible this specific incident was not an intentional play from Woodbury, but that seems unlikely since the 7-footer has done this before. During Iowa’s game against Wisconsin, he did it twice. This is happening far too many times for it to be unintentional. Some type of punishment – a suspension, perhaps – needs to be given to Woodbury from Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany.
This past Sunday night, Louisville took down Northern Iowa to reach its fourth straight Sweet 16. Senior Wayne Blackshear also became the first Cardinals player in school history to play for four straight squads that reached the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Tuesday morning, the school attempted to celebrate the accomplishment by posting the statistic to its Facebook page. Unfortunately, they screwed up and named Blackshear as the only player in NCAA Division One history to accomplish the feat. That isn’t even close to true, as dozens of players in college basketball history to have reached the Sweet 16 four straight times.Kentucky fans, predictably, are having a field day, claiming that the school is perpetuating a “lie.”…. “And the lie detector test determined….THAT was a lie!” @KySportsRadio pic.twitter.com/D1uwIpmGoJ— Jeremy Kemble (@IAM4UKWILDCATS) March 24, 2015UL Athletics sends out a blatant lie today http://t.co/ZTni2u97L9— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) March 24, 2015University of Louisville claims Wayne Blackshear is the first to appear in four Sweet 16 games. Australia’s bid to defend their Asian Cup crown began in miserable fashion as they slumped to a shock 1-0 loss to Jordan in Al Ain on Sunday.Anas Bani Yaseen’s bullet header midway through the first half gave the unfancied underdogs a hard-earned and entirely deserved victory in the opening fixture of Group B.Though content to sit back and counter, Vital Borkelmans’ men forced Mat Ryan into regular saves and could have had a second to celebrate if not for a fine save from the Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper. After what has felt like a drawn-out transfer saga, Harry Maguire has finally joined Manchester United from Leicester City. While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is far from done yet with his Old Trafford rebuild, his new United is beginning to take shape. With an increased focus on young, hungry talent, players ready to hit the ground running thanks to their familiarity with the requirements of the British game, the Norwegian will be hoping that his team can get off to a better start this season than they managed under Jose Mourinho in 2018-19. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? But what will Maguire bring to the Red Devils having finally become a United player? In the England international, Solskjaer has somebody who has delivered with a decent level of consistency in his Leicester career and has also shown a level of work-rate at his previous club Hull City which has clearly persuaded Mike Phelan – then Tigers number two and latterly manager, now Solskjaer’s right-hand man – to put in a good word for him at United. He could also prove to be very versatile thanks to his role in differing shapes in his career so far.Maguire has been widely identified as not being quick enough to fit in to the kind of high-pressing outfit which the new United look set to become, apparently unable to make up any ground lost to nippy forwards in behind the defensive line. But he has proven his powers of recovery time and again in the shirts of Leicester and England. What speed he gives up in his legs he often accounts for in his head, with his anticipatory defending getting club and country out of many a tight spot. He’s a big, brave leader of a defender too, which is something United have lacked too often in recent years.Just as Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the first natural right-back at the club for a good few years, with the instincts of a defender and the ability to effect a tackle in the heart, the body and the mind rather than in the memory bank, so Maguire is unique in United’s ranks in that he is a fearless centre-back at the top of his game. But for Lindelof, who can’t have been far behind Luke Shaw in the club’s Player of the Year polling last season, United’s centre-back options have all failed them to some extent of late. As such, Lindelof and Maguire should now be considered the primary partnership when Solskjaer looks to line up with his favoured four-man defence to begin the new campaign. The only question mark may be in relation to which right-footer plays on their more natural side, with Maguire having played to the left of Wes Morgan for Leicester and Lindelof having often played in the same channel alongside Chris Smalling for the Reds.Lindelof has said in the past that he is happy to fill in on the left, but Maguire seems to have fitted in on that side more naturally.“For me, it’s not a problem. I’m used to playing on the left side as well but I’ll play wherever the manager wants me to play,” Lindelof told ManUtd.com in October 2018.“I don’t see a problem having two right-footers as central defenders. I have quite a good left foot and can manage to play on the left as well so it’s not a problem.”Another option open to Solskjaer would be to go with three at the back, particularly if he wants to play with an extra edge in attack and allow Paul Pogba more responsibility in midfield. Maguire has played in a back three extensively, both with England and with Hull.At the KCOM Stadium he managed to eventually force his way into a line-up which had seen Steve Bruce abandon his traditional 4-4-2 for a three-man back line with Alex Bruce, James Chester and Curtis Davies having initially filled the roles. And with England the 26-year-old became something of a national hero when playing as part of a trio at the 2018 World Cup finals alongside Kyle Walker and John Stones. That would allow Wan-Bissaka and Shaw greater freedom to get forward as wing-backs for United, supplying width from deep in attack. However Solskjaer chooses to deploy Maguire, he and Wan-Bissaka look likely to make United a far more solid proposition defensively than they have been in quite some time. The manager’s rebuild will likely continue well into the 2020-21 season, with United clearly needing far more than just three or four additions to what was quickly proven to be a squad lacking in quality last term. However, their defence at the very least should be far more reliable and consistent in the forthcoming campaign than it has been under successive managers since 2013. SOUTH BEND, IN – AUGUST 31: Student fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish cheer for their team against the Temple Owls at Notre Dame Stadium on August 31, 2013 in South Bend, Indiana. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)Fan bases make college football. Perhaps no sport has a more vast array of unique, different fan bases, that have different traditions and values. Many of them are among the most noteworthy fan bases in all of sports.College football is very much a lifestyle. There are fans that will show up for a college football Saturday on a Wednesday, and spend half the week tailgating and preparing for the four hours after kick-off.There are fans like that from the schools on our list here. However, these schools have reputations that exceed the realities of how die-hard the majority of the fan base actually is.Here are the eight most overrated fan bases in college football:8. Notre Dame (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)The Fighting Irish definitely have some die hard fans. It is hard to get a ticket to any game in South Bend, and there is a reason that Notre Dame can take the “Shamrock Series” all over the country and fill big stadiums for games. It is this same national fan base that makes Notre Dame fans the butt of many jokes for other huge college football fan bases. While those in SEC country and at many Big Ten schools grew up living and dying with their local team, Notre Dame fans often latch on no matter where they lived or whether they have any actual connection to the school. As you can imagine, this leads to some pretty flighty fans that chime up about the Fighting Irish when things are going well, but not so much otherwise.7. Florida (Photo by Sam Greenwood/Getty Images)It hasn’t been that long since Florida was the top program in the country. The Swamp is one of the more prominent stadiums in the SEC, but it hasn’t exactly been the most ferocious environment as of late.Through the Will Muschamp and Jim McElwain tenures, the team has suffered plenty of tough losses in Gainesville, none worse than the one to then-FCS Georgia Southern. That ultimately cost Muschamp his job. This whole stretch has been a real blow to the mystique of Gator fans.6. USC (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)The entire Pac-12 has something of an enthusiasm gap. That doesn’t end with the Trojans.USC is the most historic and notable program in the conference, and enter most seasons with national championship aspirations. The Trojans are also one of the few programs that can recruit with the top of the SEC and Big Ten. However, USC doesn’t have the same level of fervent fan interest. The Coliseum provides a pretty cool atmosphere. The fans just aren’t as crazy as most of the other programs of USC’s standing.Next: No. 5-1 >>> Pages: Page 1 Page 2

Fromm is the man in Athens.NebraskaTrue freshman Adrian Martinez is looking really good, but reports out of Lincoln say that it’s probable that Tristan Gebbia will be the Week 1 starter.Ohio StateThis could have been the most-intense quarterback battle in the country, but Joe Burrow opted to transfer out. It’s Dwayne Haskins’ job. Tate Martell will play, though.OklahomaReplacing a Heisman Trophy winner is never easy. Who will earn the nod at Oklahoma in 2018? Kyler Murray, the former Texas A&M QB, was the Sooners’ backup in 2017. He’s in line to be that guy in 2018. The MLB might be calling, though. We’ll say Murray decides to stay put in Norman, Okla. for another season.Texas (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)Will Sam Ehlinger, Texas’ starter at the end of the 2017 season, hold onto the job over Shane Buechele? While the signed players were good enough to earn Texas one of the highest-rated classes in the country, head coach Tom Herman had even better news.Per 247Sports, on Thursday morning, Herman revealed that the Longhorns still have scholarships available that they plan on giving out, and could make another announcement before the week is over.“We still have about five or six scholarships that we’ll probably sign,” Herman said. “We’re not going to sign guys just to sign guys, but if the right guys are available then we’ll certainly do that.“We still plan on maybe even one or two left to sign in this signing period. Certainly, we’ll sign a couple of more in the next signing period.”Among the potential signings could be 4-star OT Javonne Shepherd, who gave Texas his commitment but has yet to sign his letter of intent.247Sports noted that 4-star OL Isaiah Hookfin could be another candidate, as he was expected to announce his commitment to Baylor but ultimately changed his mind on National Signing Day.Herman stated that the Longhorns would be actively searching for players that were the right fit, and would not sign players just for the sake of bringing up their numbers.“If there’s a player out there we feel like we can develop into a player that can help us win a conference title and a national title, then he falls into that category,” Herman said. “We’re not just going to signing guys just to sign guys for numbers.”
