Kroenke has no plans to sell Arsenal

first_imgArsenal have received no contact over a potential takeover and owner Stan Kroenke would have no intention of selling his controlling stake, Press Association Sport understands. Kroenke pushed through his £430million-plus takeover in April 2011, and now holds 66.83% of the club to give him overall control. The Kroenke Sports Enterprise Group has a history of sustained involvement in all of his sporting interests in the United States, which include the Denver Nuggets of the NBA and the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL, as well as Major League Soccer club the Colorado Rapids. Uzbek oil magnate Alisher Usmanov remains Arsenal’s second largest shareholder with a 29.96% holding, but does not currently have a seat on the board. Reports suggest that, if successful in a potential takeover, the consortium – said to be backed by funds from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates – would be ready to work with Usmanov’s Red & White Holdings to help drive the Gunners back to the top of European football, vowing to slash ticket prices and stop the sale of star players such as former captains Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal, who have not won a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup, head to north-London rivals Tottenham on Sunday afternoon looking to boost their hopes of finishing in the top four, and securing Champions League qualification once again under manager Arsene Wenger – who has long championed the club’s self-sustaining policy and the need for UEFA’s new Financial Fair Play regulations. Reports have claimed a Middle East consortium are preparing a £1.5billion bid to buy out the Barclays Premier League club at around £20,000 a share. However, sources close to the Arsenal board on Sunday morning maintained there had been no approach, informal or otherwise, to the American owner, who remains “in it for the long term”. center_img Press Associationlast_img read more

XFL rosters 2020: The former NFL, college names you’ll recognize in new football league

first_imgXFL commissioner Oliver Luck has said in several interviews he wants quarterbacks to be the focus of the league. He felt having good quarterbacks would greatly impact whether or not the XFL becomes successful.”If there’s one thing we learned from watching the Alliance it was that quarterback play is critical. In the game of football today — whether it’s pro, college or even high school arguably — your quarterback play is determinative,” Luck told the Tampa Bay Times. “So we made an effort to sign guys, some of whom played in the AAF but the vast majority didn’t.”Since quarterbacks are so important to the XFL, let’s look at the names that made final rosters.MORE XFL: Rules | Schedule | Uniforms | RostersQuarterbacks in the XFLPlayerXFL teamCardale JonesD.C. WildcatsA few recognizable names include Cardale Jones, the Ohio State QB who led the Buckeyes to a national championship after injuries to starting quarterbacks. Josh Johnson is a journeyman NFL quarterback who has signed with 13 teams. Matt McGloin, Connor Cook and Aaron Murray all played for high-profile college football teams and all saw success.Quinton Flowers is an interesting player as he’s listed as a QB/RB on the team’s official roster. He played QB at South Florida before switching to RB while trying to make an NFL roster. Brogan Roback isn’t too well-known for his play on the field, but he was a featured player on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”While the players above all made the 52-player rosters, it’s still unclear which players will be starting for each team. The BattleHawks appear to have a four-way competition at quarterback as they carry the most players at the position of any team. Three of the eight teams (Defenders, Dragons, Roughnecks) are carrying just two quarterbacks. The XFL announced trimmed-down rosters for its 2020 reboot season, and among the names are plenty of players you’ll recognize when the new football league kicks off in February. In total there are 416 players in the XFL, 52 for each of the eight teams. Those are a lot of names to sort through, and there will be plenty you may not recognize. But there are some who had mild success in the NFL, or were stars for their college football teams. Fans of the AAF (Alliance of American Football) will recognize plenty of the names — a lot of players moved over from the now-defunct football league.  Other notable XFL playersAntonio Callaway, WRCameron Artis-Payne, RBSammie Coates, WRLance Dunbar, RBKony Ealy, DEMatt Jones, RBChristine Michael, RBRahim Moore, DBDonnel Pumphrey, RBKeenan Reynolds, WREli Rogers, WRRashad Ross, WRWill Sutton, DTAndre Williams, RBScooby Wright, LBDerron Smith, SCharles James, CBWill Hill, STerrance Williams, WRKenneth Farrow, RBMarquette King, PNick Novak, KGarrett Hartley, KGoing through the rosters, the names above are ones that stuck out to me the most. You can go through the rosters yourself to see if there are any you recognize that I missed. But most should be able to recognize the majority of the names from the list.Antonio Callaway was a fourth-round draft pick in 2018, but a variety of off-field issues led to his release from the Browns. Sammie Coates and Eli Rogers are both former Steelers receivers. Keenan Reynolds is the former Navy quarterback who once finished fifth in the Heisman voting.Notable running backs include Christine Michael (second-round draft pick in 2012), Matt Jones (third-round draft pick in 2015) and Donnel Pumphrey (third-most rushing yards in a career in NCAA history) among others.last_img read more

Price for temporary repairs to levees hits $123M and is still climbing

first_imgOMAHA — The cost to make temporary repairs to levees impacted by spring flooding along the Missouri River continues to rise.John Leighow, chief of readiness and contingency operations with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Northwestern District, says recent dry weather has allowed their teams access to more levees for assessment.“Additional damages are being identified as the water continues to drop and our field engineers are attempting to accurately assess the scope of damages to approximately 150 miles of damaged levees,” Leighow says.He adds, the amount of money that’s been spent to temporarily fix damaged levees is growing.“Currently, the cost of these efforts is around $123 million and it’s climbing,” Leighow says. “That’s $3 million more than what we had last week. As of now, we are not anticipating any budget constraints regarding recovery efforts.”Even though funding is currently available, Leighow says there may soon be more competing claims for the money.“We are now approaching the peak of hurricane season right around the end of August into Labor Day — early September timeline,” Leighow says. “The peak of hurricane season will compete for the same resources that we need for our recovery efforts.”Releases from Gavins Point Dam in Yankton, South Dakota remain at 70,000 cubic feet per second — nearly double the average release for this time of year.Missouri River Basin Water Management Division Chief John Remus says adjustments in releases are now tied to precipitation with mountain snowpack mostly gone.“The snowpack is all melted,” Remus says. “We haven’t necessarily seen all of it in the reservoir yet, but the main driver (of conditions) from here on out would be precipitation.”To date, nine of the 51 damaged levees in the Omaha District have been temporarily repaired. Corps officials say it could be next spring before every breach in the system is plugged.last_img read more

Go back to the enewsletter History has been made a

first_imgGo back to the enewsletterHistory has been made and a long-anticipated dream realised in Mojave, California, as Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity, landed from her maiden spaceflight to cheers from Richard Branson and the teams from Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company.Just last week, Branson indicated all was in readiness for a flight into space before Christmas for the program, and it’s a target that’s now been successfully achieved. Not only is this the first human spaceflight to be launched from American soil since the final Space Shuttle mission in 2011, but the very first time that a crewed vehicle built for commercial, passenger service has reached space.VSS Unity lands smoothly after her first SpaceflightThe historic achievement has been recognised by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) who announced today that early next year they will present pilots Mark “Forger” Stucky and Frederick “CJ” Sturckow with FAA Commercial Astronaut Wings at a ceremony in Washington DC. CJ, as a four-time Space Shuttle pilot, will become the only person to have been awarded NASA and FAA wings. The accomplishment has also been recognised by the NASA Flight Opportunities Program, which flew four space science and technology experiments on VSS Unity, making this Virgin Galactic’s first revenue-generating flight.Virgin Galactic’s First Spaceflight on 13 December, 2018The spectacular spaceflight, which was witnessed by a large crowd of staff and their families, as well as special guests and media, saw a 60-second planned rocket motor burn which propelled VSS Unity to almost three times the speed of sound and to an apogee of 51.4 miles. As VSS Unity coasted upwards through the black sky and into space, Virgin Galactic Mission Control confirmed the news and congratulated the two astronaut pilots: “Unity, Welcome to Space”.After a Mach 2.5 supersonic re-entry into the atmosphere, which utilised Unity’s unique “feathering” configuration, Forger and CJ guided the spaceship down to a smooth runway landing and an emotional homecoming welcome.Virgin Galactic’s first two astronauts walk back to greet RichardCommenting from the flight line Richard Branson said: “Many of you will know how important the dream of space travel is to me personally. Ever since I watched the moon landings as a child I have looked up to the skies with wonder. We started Virgin nearly 50 years ago dreaming big and loving a challenge. Today, as I stood among a truly remarkable group of people with our eyes on the stars, we saw our biggest dream and our toughest challenge to date fulfilled. It was an indescribable feeling: joy, relief, exhilaration and anticipation for what is yet to come.“Today, for the first time in history, a crewed spaceship, built to carry private passengers, reached space. Today we completed our first revenue-generating flight and our pilots earned their Commercial Astronaut Wings.Richard Branson celebrates first Spaceflight“Today, we have shown that Virgin Galactic really can open space to change the world for good. We will now push on with the remaining portion of our flight test program, which will see the rocket motor burn for longer and VSS Unity fly still faster and higher towards giving thousands of private astronauts an experience which provides a new, planetary perspective to our relationship with the Earth and the cosmos. This is a momentous day and I could not be more proud of our teams who together have opened a new chapter of space exploration.”Go back to the enewsletterlast_img read more
