NASCORP Lauds NHA

first_imgThe management of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) has lauded authorities of the National Housing Authority (NHA) for the completion of a 35 unit housing community in Jah Tondo Town, Brewerville, outside Monrovia.During the tour of the facilities on Wednesday, vice chair for the Board of NASSCORP, Cletus Sieh said his organization is delighted with the level of work the NHA has done in completing a total of 91 units. Mr. Sieh expressed gratitude to NHA, adding, “As a partner who is a 100 percent funder of the project, we will continue to collaborate with the housing authority to address the need for housing in Liberia.”He said that supporting housing projects remains part of NASSCORP’s social responsibility.Mr. Sieh said since the appointment of Samuel Wluh as managing director of the NHA, “there have been more tangibles,” for which NASSCORP has seen the need to continue working with the Wluh-led administration to ensure that all Liberians own their own house. He said the process of constructing more of the housing units was important so that project’s funders can see that their contribution to the economy was purposeful “because of the level of developments currently taking place across the country.” For his part, NHA Deputy Managing Director for Administration, Prince A. Wreh, assured the NASSCORP officials of the commitment of the NHA to provide housing for the people of Liberia. He said his organization remains focused in addressing some of the challenges, including the provision of water, and working with the Ministry of Education to ensure that children have access to school, particularly in the Jah Tondo Town area.“We are involved in formal community developments such as social and economic surveys to capture schools, clinics and even police stations in the project diagram,” Mr. Wreh said.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

SA to host 2017 Canoe Marathon Worlds

first_img20 November 2013 South African canoeing has received a major boost with the announcement by the International Canoe Federation that the World Canoe Marathon Championships will be hosted by the Natal Canoe Club at Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg in 2017. The announcement came at the ICF board of directors’ meeting in Lima, Peru on the weekend, bringing to fruition the lobbying work done by the Natal Canoe Club to host the event at the home of the famous Dusi Canoe Marathon. “This is a major boost for canoeing in South Africa,” Canoeing South Africa president Christo Horn said this week. “Marathon racing is one of our strongest disciplines, and we currently have both the senior men’s K1 world champion and under-23 men’s K1 world champion in Hank McGregor and Andy Birkett to go with our long history of marathon successes. “This will allow our elite athletes to perform in front of their hometown supporters, and it will be a great opportunity to market and grow the discipline of flat water marathon racing at a venue more famous for river racing.” For under-23 world champ Birkett, a Pietermaritzburg resident and member of the Natal Canoe Club (NCC), the event will be an opportunity to compete for a world title on home water.‘A great place’ “I am very excited. In 2017, I will be 27. That’s pretty much the perfect age,” Birkett said. “I’m sure that Pietermaritzburg will be a great place to have it as well. The people tend to support big sporting events held in the city. It’s quite a small community, but sports events, like the 2013 Mountain Bike World Championships, are very well supported. Hopefully we’ll see something along the same line for the Canoe Marathon World Champs.” Brett Austen Smith, the general manager of the NCC, said he wanted to make the event as accessible as possible for overseas visitors. “We are very grateful to the ICF for awarding us this event,” he said. “Their confidence is very encouraging and we see this as reward for the strong reputation South Africa has in marathon canoeing. “Our intention is to make the World Champs a truly memorable event, and the biggest event in the history of marathon racing. “We will be able to offer very affordable food and accommodation packages due to the exchange rate. The strong Zulu Culture of this region will also make for an exciting and interesting event, both on and off the water. We will be able to offer and present an event that will be totally unique for both competitors and spectators alike.” Austen Smith said R17.5-million (approximately €1.3-million) would be spent to ensure the World Championships will be memorable. “Hosting the 2017 event will ensure that facilities at Camps Drift are significantly upgraded. This will result in a world class venue, not only for competition, but for training during northern hemisphere winters as well. “The NCC Clubhouse has gym and physio facilities, as well as access to perfect training waters. The close proximity to the City centre means that paddlers never have far to travel for shopping conveniences like coffee shops and internet facilities that are always so important to athletes. Year round, the weather is very suitable for paddling.”A reward Three-time world champion Hank McGregor said he saw the awarding of the World Championships as a reward for South Africa’s passion for marathon paddling. “It’s fantastic news, ‘ he said. “The ICF has clearly seen South Africa as a country that is serious about marathons and this is due to all the results, from our junior boys and girls to our masters over the years. “It is such a big plus, but we mustn’t take it for granted. “I would love to be part of it in some way,” McGregor added. “I am getting a little long in the tooth, so I don’t know if I will be racing the seniors, but I really want to be there in some form or other.” The NCC will host a number of major events at Camps Drift in the lead-up to the 2017 World Championships, including the 2015 Kwa-Zulu Natal Championships, the South African Championships and the All African Championships currently planned for the venue. In 2016 the ICF World Cup will serve as a dress rehearsal for the World Champs.Masters Cup The 2017 World Championships will be preceded by the Masters Cup events for veteran and masters paddlers, which is expected to be very well supported by local paddlers. “Our veteran and masters age group paddling is extremely strong, and because there is no limit to the entry for these events, we expect a huge turnout of local paddlers eager to be a part of this event in their own backyard,” said Austen Smith. “We have four years to prepare for this event, and also to get our talent identification process geared up so that we can really mount a considerable challenge in every age group and category.”last_img read more

ODNR adds more than 900 acres to Shawnee State Forest

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest A Forest Legacy project in southern Ohio recently resulted in an addition of 929 acres of highly strategic forest land, an area known as the “Little Smokies of Ohio,” to Shawnee State Forest, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).“By acquiring these ‘Little Smokies’ parcels, ODNR continues to show its commitment toward protecting and fostering the growth of Ohio’s forest lands,” said Robert Boyles, Ohio’s state forester. “These additional woodland acres will fill many of the largest gaps in the Shawnee State Forest, and by using proper management, will provide Ohioans with healthy forests, which create ideal habitats for all of our wildlife, offer countless recreational activities and produce the timber products that contribute to our state’s continued economic growth.”The 63,747-acre Shawnee State Forest includes Ohio’s only state-designated wilderness area and surrounds the 1,168-acre Shawnee State Park. Together, they are the largest contiguous protected forest in Ohio. The project complements partner efforts such as The Nature Conservancy’s plan to connect their nearby 17,123-acre Edge of Appalachia Preserve to Shawnee State Forest through the Sunshine Corridor.“It’s really satisfying to see the pieces of the puzzle coming together at the Shawnee State Forest as we work to connect it with our Edge of Appalachia Preserve,” said Bill Stanley, assistant Ohio director of The Nature Conservancy. “There was no question that The Nature Conservancy should assist in making this deal a reality. Having this land under ODNR management will allow the forests to mature, increasing their value to water quality and habitat.”“The Ohio chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is thrilled about helping provide 929 acres of new hunting access. This is a great step forward, and it fits perfectly with our ‘Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.’ initiative,” said Lee Crocker, Ohio regional biologist with the NWTF. “Ohio has a critical need to provide more hunting and outdoor recreation access, and the NWTF volunteers are working hard to accomplish this. These additional acres will create excellent brood and nesting habitat for wild turkeys and will provide important habitat for a whole host of other wildlife species.”This acquisition is also important for recreation and tourism, as it protects the routes of popular hiking trails (including the North Country National Scenic Trail, American Discovery Trail and the Buckeye Trail) and scenic drives (like the Scenic Scioto Heritage State Byway and Shawnee State Forest’s Driving Tour Loop). Finally, the project supports the Ohio Forest Legacy Program’s core goal of protecting working forests in the most productive counties for timber statewide. The protection of this important forest land was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, Forest Legacy Program and funding from The Nature Conservancy and NWTF. Other supporting partners include the ODNR divisions of Parks and Wildlife; North Country Trail Association; American Discovery Trail Society; and the Buckeye Trail Association. The ODNR Division of Forestry works to promote the wise use and sustainable management of Ohio’s public and private woodlands. BCCI: Old habits never die

first_imgA friend called the day after Chandu Borde was anointed India cricket manager and said, “See, given that it’s Raj Singh and Sharad Pawar, do you think they meant Chandu Pandit?” It was good for a laugh, but creeping into the back of the mind came the immediate afterthought. Suppose? As,A friend called the day after Chandu Borde was anointed India cricket manager and said, “See, given that it’s Raj Singh and Sharad Pawar, do you think they meant Chandu Pandit?” It was good for a laugh, but creeping into the back of the mind came the immediate afterthought. Suppose? As farce after farce has continued to unravel, taking the fans’ minds with it, mistaking Pandit for Borde could have been a very real possibility with this BCCI. To be absolutely fair to the BCCI, Graham Ford’s conduct after he left India was unbecoming. Even if he was given a roasting at the interview, offered monkey-nuts for a salary and forced to accept a straitjacket in the name of working conditions. Whatever his reasons for changing his mind, a courtesy call to anyone in Indian cricket who had sought him out in the first place was the least he could have done before posting a thanks-but-no-thanks message on a website. It’s called manners. The BCCI’s mistake-one more in an impressively long list this year-was to jump into an announcement that could have waited 24 hours. They left the door open, and ended up looking stupid. Not that that takes any effort, with the current dispensation. Surprising because most of its key office-bearers have the reputation of being pitbulls in their own fields. Somehow, with the bogey of Jagmohan Dalmiya banished (and no doubt chuckling in Kolkata), all they look like now is a bunch of squabbling school boys each trying to impress the headmaster who himself has lost control of the entire institution.advertisementDespite Ford’s unbecoming conduct, the BCCI’s mistake was to make an announcement that could have waited 24 hours.Inside the first six months of the year, the BCCI has demonised its best players, tried to cut salaries, changed terms previously agreed upon, given one TV partner a discount on a deal (not its fault), allowing bank guarantee to lapse which caused the collapse of a $216-million TV deal (most definitely its fault). The BCCI’s many marketing partners are struggling to find takers for numerous mickey mouse tours before the Indian team’s tour of England this summer, but no one in the Board has been able to schedule an extra practice game for the team when they travel to Australia in their winter. When Pawar, who now has ambitions of heading the ICC, took charge at the BCCI, he promised transparency, accountability and professionalism. Today, those words sound like the Borde or Pandit gag. In any case, Pawar seems distracted between choosing a President and finding a coach. Naturally, anarchy has broken around him. The BCCI’s current hierarchy has produced a platoon of mini-Pawars, wannabes who strut around the country eager to be seen and heard, preferably on TV.A weary BCCI official says, “Board officials must be responsible. You don’t have to be on TV everyday, you don’t have to make statements everyday. Only one person should speak for the Board.” These days it’s a rotating roster. It began with Lalit Modi, the marketing guru, followed by Shashank Manohar, the hardliner. Now it’s N. Srinivasan, the financial whiz, and no, we won’t go on about the bank guarantee. Ambient noise continues to be provided by Rajiv Shukla and Niranjan Shah, still head to head in the contest for soundbite production. When self-righteous Australians and outraged Englishmen rant on about the BCCI’s sinister plans to hijack cricket, Indians have to stop themselves. Not so much from shrieking ‘racism!’ but from breaking into giggling fits. The western world must have spotted a military efficiency that escaped us.All we see is the embarrassing anticlimax of the World Cup, imploding TV deals, the coach hunt that turned to custard and the appointment of a manager who will celebrate his 73rd birthday in England, aviator sunglasses and beaming smile in place. Cake, anyonelast_img read more
