Earagail Arts 2019 launched in memory of Dessie Larkin

first_imgThe 31st year of the Earagail Arts Festival will be dedicated to the memory of a dear friend of the local arts scene – Dessie Larkin.Dessie Larkin RIPDessie Larkin, a former county councillor who passed away in March, was a long-serving board member and former Chair of the Earagail Arts Festival. The Letterkenny man was fondly remembered at the launch of the festival on Monday at Rockhill House Estate.  “He demonstrated what was important about the festival. That was about bringing people together and celebrating what is probably one of the most fundamental human endeavours, which is art,” said Artistic Director Paul Brown.Joan Crawford, Failte Ireland, Pauric Kelly, Inishowen Motors, and Paul Brown, Artistic Director of Earagail Arts Festival at the 2019 launch. This year’s programme leads with a major new music commission in partnership with India’s leading folk festival in Rajasthan. Along with this is a series of spoken word, circus, comedy and special events celebrating diversity and freedom of movement and a visual arts programme from east to west reaching across bridges, islands and horizons.Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Paul Harrigan at the launch of Earagail Arts Festival 2019 in Rockhill House. Photo: Rachel McLaughlinKaroline Sweeney, Jimmy Stafford and Patrick Gildea at the launch of Earagail Arts Festival 2019 in Rockhill House. Photo: Rachel McLaughlinMeabh Uí Chonnachain, who is one of the board members for the festival, said that this year’s festival is about “diversity, equality, bringing together artists, programmes and visual art.” She also talked about the impact Earagail Arts has on Donegal with the number of people that attend the festival. More than 38,000 people attended different events last year. Insulating Scissors Trusses

Unlike parallel-chord trusses — a type of truss that creates a sloped ceiling that is just as steep as the roof — a scissors truss creates a ceiling that has a gentler slope than the roof slope. You end up with a steep roof and a not-so-steep ceiling — in other words, a ceiling that is almost a cathedral ceiling but not quite.A scissors truss creates a cramped attic that is very tight at the eaves and somewhat more generous in height near the ridge. It’s not the type of attic that you want to spend much time in, since it is far too cramped to negotiate easily.Builders sometimes specify scissors trusses in hopes that the trusses will create a cathedral-like effect with less hassle than rafters or parallel-chord trusses, which can be tough to insulate well.Surprisingly, some builders install scissors trusses before they have finalized their insulation plan. Then they post a question on the GBA site: “How do I insulate my scissors trusses?”Scissors trusses can be tricky to insulate, because loose insulation doesn’t generally like to be installed on a slope unless it is fully encapsulated by rigid materials (due to the risk that the insulation will slide downhill). Whatever insulation plan you come up with, talk to your insulation contractor before you order your trusses, because there is no use in specifying an insulation method that your local contractor won’t agree to.A variety of insulation materials can be used to insulate scissors truss roofs, as long as:Like ordinary roof trusses, scissors trusses come with or without a raised heel (sometimes called an energy heel). If you ended up with scissors trusses without raised heels,… last_img read more

Another Reason Best Buy Is Doomed – And Why That’s A Problem

first_imgTroubled electronics retailer Best Buy is already on the ReadWrite DeathWatch list, and this holiday shopping season could be a make-or-break period for the company. After my visit there last weekend, I’m increasingly worried that it’s gonna break. And I take no happiness in this realization, as my experience also reminded me just how much we need a good brick and mortar place to buy electronics.New Speakers For My New iPhone 5As faithful readers of my smartphone adventures may recall, I recently got a new iPhone 5 (see My Week With The iPhone 5). That’s great, but as I noted when they were first released, Apple’s new Lightning connectors do not work with existing peripherals (see iPhone 5’s Lightning Connector Is A Bigger Problem Than Apple Thinks). And I can now say with certainty that even with Apple’s $30 adapter, you can’t play an iPhone 5 through an old iPhone speaker dock. (Plus it looks ridiculous.) So I pushed the button for my top choice. Nothing happened. I pushed the button for another one. Silence. I pushed the buttons for all of them. Nothing. I wasn’t surprised, but I was sad and a bit frustrated.I spent another 15 minutes looking for a salesperson to get some help. I eventually found one, who acknowledged that the system was broken and should be fixed in a few days. He suggested I come back later and check. What Now?Well, maybe I will and maybe I won’t. It was a hassle the first time and probably will be the next time, too – and I can’t be sure the system will be working even when I get there. (If you saw the cast of characters wandering around that store, you’d be surprised anything worked there, ever.)I’m still unwilling to buy iPhone speakers without listening to them, though. So for the short term I’m using my old iPhone 4 as an expensive iPod, or hooking up my iPhone 5 via a headphone cable (no charging, no remote control) and hoping I don’t accidentally kick the cord and pull the phone off the table onto the floor and break it. Sure, I could choose one system to order, and send it back if I didn’t like it. But I was really hoping to be able to compare my top choices. Now I’m thinking about how much we really need a clean, well-lighted, properly functioning place to actually see and try the equipment we want to buy. I was hoping that Best Buy would still be that place. And maybe they are in many places, but not the store I visited. And who knows how much longer Best Buy is going to be around, anyway?I was ready to buy, but didn’t because I couldn’t properly test the merchandise. As online retailing increasingly takes over, that’s going to be a bigger and bigger problem for non-commodity items. Who knows, maybe Amazon or other etailers will have to start building their own showrooms. Because speakers aren’t the only things that at least some shoppers aren’t going buy without a chance to check them out in person first. Lead image courtesy of Shutterstock. Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Clearly, it was time to upgrade the Altec-Lansing iMT520 that had been providing tunes in my kitchen for the last few years. I hopped online, and found several choices that connected wirelessly via Bluetooth or Apple’s Airplay system. Several of them looked good and were in my price range. But there was one problem: There was no way to tell what they sounded like. And since the whole point of these devices is their sound output, I was unwilling to pull the trigger on any of them sight unseen and sound unheard.Failure At Best BuyInstead, I hopped in the car and headed down to my local Best Buy. I was hopeful that the store would have at least some of the models I’d researched and I’d be able to listen to them before I handed over my credit card.As I walked into the crowded store (a good sign, I guess), my first thought was, “This place is so noisy I probably won’t be able to hear anything out of these speakers.” Then I rationalized that if I can hear anything, at least I’ll know they’ll probably be more than adequate for my kitchen. After wandering around the giant store for 15 minutes, I finally found the aisle with the devices I was looking for. And surprise, they actually had several of the ones I was interested in, plus a couple others I hadn’t see online. And the prices weren’t bad either. Internet services across all platforms continued to remain suspended in Kashmir

first_imgInternet services across all platforms continued to remain suspended in Kashmir since August 5 even as there was considerable improvement in the situation, officials said on Saturday.Internet services continued to remain barred in the entire valley except for few government offices and business establishments, the officials said. They said there is no word from the authorities on the restoration of the services so far, even as demands, especially from journalist community, have grown for the resumption of the services. The media-persons have been demanding the restoration of at least BSNL’s Broadband services to discharge their professional duties. The authorities snapped all communication lines — landline telephone and mobile phone services and Internet across all platforms — on August 5, hours before the Centre announced its decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution and to bifurcate the erstwhile state into two Union territories. Most of the top-level and second-rung separatist politicians have been taken into preventive custody while mainstream leaders including two former chief ministers — Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti — have been either detained or placed under house arrest. While landline telephones were gradually restored first, post-paid mobile services were resumed later. However, pre-paid mobile and Internet services are yet to be resumed. The officials said there are apprehensions that vested interests might misuse the internet services to create law and order situation in the valley and a decision to restore the facilities would be taken at an appropriate time after assessing the situation. Meanwhile, shops and business establishments remained open till noon in most parts of Kashmir valley and in some areas in the civil lines till late afternoon, on Saturday, the officials said. They said most modes of public transport were plying in the valley. While there was a semblance of normalcy in the Kashmir valley over the past few weeks after over three months of protest shutdown over the abrogation of Article 370, the fresh shutdown started on Wednesday last week as threatening posters warning shopkeepers and public transport operators appeared at some places in the city here and elsewhere.last_img read more
