His 121 in the second innings at Lords, the highest score in the match, was crucial to South Africa’s 51-run victory. “I think we were able to post totals in this series,” Smith said. “We were able to build partnerships and get scores on the board that were substantial and allowed our bowlers to bowl with maybe a bit more freedom, and allowed them to attack and get the rewards.” Turned to PhilanderFinally, the new ball arrived, but Prior, looking solid, managed a ferocious four off Steyn’s first over. Proteas’ skipper Smith turned to Philander to make a breakthrough. “South Africa were the better side, not just in this test match, but over the course of the series and they thoroughly deserve their victory,” England captain Andrew Strauss said in a post-match interview. Man of the matchThe man of the match at Lords, though, was Vernon Philander, who showed his all-round ability at test level for the first time. In South Africa’s first innings of 309 all out, he and JP Duminy shared the top score of 61, and he followed that up with 35, which was the third-highest score in the Proteas’ second knock. “Moments like this make cricket what it is. It’s a great advert for test cricket, the way the game unfolded. It’s just a fantastic day for us,” Amla said in his post-match interview. Facing an old ball, but with the threat of a new one on the way, the pair played their shots, including some superb reverse sweeps by Prior off of the leg-spinner Imran Tahir. As they bravely challenged the Proteas’ bowlers, so the vocal support of the crowd picked up. Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material ‘They deserve every accolade’“The entire squad, including all the players and team management, deserve every accolade they will undoubtedly receive,’ Cricket South Africa Acting CEO Jacques Faul said in a statement. “It’s a message from all of us. He’s been an integral part of the Proteas for 147 games. This was meant to be his 150th test match, so we really wanted to let him know that he’s here with us today and this series victory was for him and everything he’s done for the Proteas.” 21 August 2012South Africa celebrated Graeme Smith’s world record-equalling 93rd test as captain with a 51-run victory over England at Lords on Monday, which secured the number one ranking in test cricket for the Proteas. “Yeah, I’m not even the second best batsman in my team, so I don’t think the rankings really matter too much, but I’m just glad to be doing well for the team,” the ever-modest Amla replied. Just before the post-match presentations, Smith had written a message on his shirt for Mark Boucher, who had been forced out of the series by a career-ending eye injury. He explained it to Atherton. “I know that he is watching,” he said to cheers from the crowd. On top of that, he was the toughest bowler to get away throughout the match, and the game’s most successful bowler, claiming 2 for 48 in 24 overs in the first innings and 5 for 30 in the second off 14.5 overs. Man of the seriesHashim Amla was named man of the series. Not only was his total of 482 runs over 200 runs more than any other batsman on either side managed in the series, his 311 in the first test was better than any other batsman managed in the entire series. With his fourth ball, he nipped one away and found the edge of Prior’s bat to all but wrap up the series as the wicketkeeper departed for a very well played 73. Terrific fightbackEngland, though, fought back terrifically, with Jonny Bairstow, called up in place of the controversial Kevin Pietersen, following up his first innings’ top score of 95 with a sparkling 54 off only 47 balls. Jonathan Trott also showed attacking intent, making 63, before Dale Steyn removed him. After Philander had reduced them to 16 for 2 on Sunday, that task looked as if it would be beyond them. When he added the wicket of Ian Bell for four, with the total on 34 on Monday, it appeared the game wouldn’t become much of a contest. ‘A great feeling’Looking back on the tour of England, he added: “It’s a long two months here for this test series – three test matches – it’s a long time to stay mentally focused and to deal with the pressure of playing England in England, and to have won the series 2-0 is a great feeling.” Then Matt Prior and Stuart Broad took the game to the Proteas. Broad, playing with gay abandon, was always likely to offer an opportunity or two and he was eventually dismissed for 37, caught by Amla off the bowling of Kallis. Unfortunately for South Africa the onslaught did not slow, it grew as Graeme Swann joined Prior out in the middle. Philander had done the trick. South Africa had won the match, the series, and ascended to number one in the world rankings. Atherton pointed out that Amla is now number two in the test batting rankings and number one in the one-day international rankings. “You’ve come a long way,” he suggested. Partnership brokenAfter the pair had added 74 runs, the partnership was finally broken. A moment’s hesitation by Swann on a quick run did him in as Jacques Rudolph fired the ball in to Tahir, who threw down the stumps from a metre away to just beat Swann’s attempt to make it into the crease. With the score on 282, James Anderson joined Prior in the middle. The wicketkeeper, the established man at the crease, had to continue playing his shots and that led to him finding a thick outside edge as he attempted to drive. Sprinting in from deep, Duminy took the catch and it seemed the match was in the bag for South Africa at last. Former England captain Michael Atherton, at the post-match presentations, asked Smith about where he thought the difference was between the teams. More drama followed, however, as umpire Simon Taufel asked for a review of Morne Morkel’s delivery and the slo-mo revealed the big fast bowler had overstepped and sent down a no ball. Prior, who had almost reached the boundary, was called back and returned to the crease to rowdy cheers from the crowd. The very next delivery, to last man in Steven Finn, went to second slip where Jacques Kallis bagged the catch to end the contest and the series. “They have made the entire country extremely proud and it has been a wonderful period for South African sport coming after the impressive performance of Team SA at the Olympic Games and Ernie Els’s victory at the British Open Golf Championship.” England, who led by six runs on the first innings, had been set a challenging 346 for victory after South Africa posted 351 in their second innings.

Ten-year-old Ntando Vilakazi won the 2015 Nedbank Spell It Challenge after she was the only child to spell the word “handkerchief” successfully.Ten-year-old Ntando Vilakazi beat 20 000 other students from across Gauteng to be named the winner of the 2015 Nedbank Spell It Challenge. The Grade Five learner from Umdeni South’s Luyolo Primary School in Soweto fought off competition from 25 other finalists in the intense finale of the spelling competition on 7 November, earning herself a R200 000 scholarship from Monash South Africa as well as a R1 000 cash prize.“I am over the moon!” said her mother, Zandile Vilakazi, explaining how her daughter had always enjoyed reading. “She loves going to the library and doesn’t fall asleep at night without reading a book.”Selected from a group of more than 20 000 pupils from 200 schools across Gauteng, the 25 finalists took part in a four-round challenge. Vilakazi won after she was the only child to spell the word “handkerchief” successfully.THE IMPORTANCE OF READINGNedbank’s Spell It Challenge is a regional spelling competition run in partnership with Spell It South Africa, the Gauteng department of education and Monash University. All partners involved understand the importance of literacy and its power to help youth reach their full potential as the future of South Africa.Literacy was an important part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility strategy, said Nedbank’s divisional executive for corporate social responsibility, Lindiwe Themba. It highlighted the importance of the role of corporations in supporting the development of the country.“Spelling aids in reading, allowing one to discover the wonders of the world through words. It assists in shaping confidence and in building a knowledge-based economy. As such, we believe that literacy building can be a catalyst for sustainable socio-economic transformation in communities that we serve,” Themba said.PARTNERS FOR PROGRESSNedbank, through partners Spell It South Africa, has provided spelling coaches to selected schools to offer the pupils a greater opportunity to master English, in an attempt to ensure they develop good levels of literacy. The coaches offer training to improve the learners’ phonics, which is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the sounds that make up words; word and letter recognition. They also help the children develop more extensive vocabularies before they start high school.“From Grade One to Grade Four you learn to read, and from Grade Four onwards you read to learn. If you don’t get that right, you have problems,” explained Roger Dickinson, the founder of Spell It. “Our children want to learn and they need to be given the opportunity to excel in learning – that is what our partnership is about.”Spell It South Africa has helped to enrich the learning experiences of over 150 000 primary school pupils in the last five years. It aims to spread its influence further through partnerships such as this one with Nedbank.

Be sure to check out the predictive traffic info to avoid traffic jams. We also liked the Wikipedia button, which was a fun distraction to help us learn about attractions in the immediate area. Like most GPS apps, Motion X had all the basics, including residence and business searches, the ability to bookmark frequently visited places and to easily switch from maps to text directions. GPS apps have come a long way in the past few years, and for as little as 99 cents you can tap into the same features that come in a stand-alone navigator costing $150 or more. TomTom is still the Cadillac of GPS apps for iOS, and at $49.99, it is cheaper than that of most fixed units. But there are less-costly apps we looked at that modeled their features on TomTom. You do get perks for that extra money (even before a $19.99 annual fee for HD traffic info), but if you can live without advanced lane guidance and a faster-than-most location system, a cheaper app may be for you.Of which there are several. SEA Games hosting troubles anger Duterte Grace Poe files bill to protect govt teachers from malicious accusations When Adam Levine ripped off his shirt during the halftime show, it was quickly apparent that tattoos would far outnumber points in the A-T-L.Come to think of it, Maroon 5 might have benefited the most from this one.Their lame, off-key performance was probably the highlight of the night. The Rams needed until deep into the third quarter to finally surpass 100 yards, on a drive that resulted in their only points. Greg Zuerlein booted a 53-yard field goal that tied the game at 3 with just over two minutes remaining in the period, and it looked like Los Angeles might actually have a chance to pull out a game it had no business winning. After Michel’s TD, Los Angeles gave itself one more chance. Driving briskly into New England territory, the Rams had first down at the 27 when Goff lofted a pass toward the right pylon with Brandin Cooks breaking into the clear. But Patriots second-string safety Duron Harmon, in the game after Patrick Chung sustained what looked to be a broken arm, came flying over to level Cooks just as the ball was slipping through the receiver’s hands at the goal line.Cooks conceded afterward that it was a catch he should’ve made, but he was hardly alone in that category. On the very next play, Huron came at Goff on a blitz. The young quarterback flinched with the safety in his face, wobbling up a pass that was easily picked off by Stephon Gilmore.New England drove the other way for the clinching field goal. With eight seconds remaining, the Rams sent on Zuerlein to attempt a 48-yard field goal, knowing the only remote chance they had to force OT was to get three points, pull an onside kick and heave a desperation pass toward the end zone on the final play.Zuerlein was money all season, and especially in the NFC championship game against the New Orleans Saints, when he tied it up with a 48-yard field goal and won the game in overtime with a booming 57-yard effort. “You’ve got to grind it out and find a way,” said Brady, delivering a drab quote that perfectly fit the occasion.Stephen Gostkowski clinched it for the Patriots, barely guiding a 41-yard field goal inside the left upright with 1:12 remaining to make it a two-score game. What a blessing. The last thing anyone needed was the Rams having any chance to send this monstrosity to overtime.Taking nothing away from a stout defensive effort by both teams, this lackluster affair seemed more the result of two offenses that never found their footing — especially the youthful Rams and their 24-year-old quarterback, Jared Goff. There were plenty of silly mistakes, the kind of plays you normally see when teams are working through the kinks coming of training camp. Both teams were flagged for having two men in motion at the same time. The Rams were penalized for a false start when lined up on second down needing less than a yard. One of their better plays was negated by a holding penalty. They even got caught with too many men on the field.“We just played bad today,” running back C.J. Anderson said. With just over a minute to go, after the Rams were called for yet another holding penalty, the press box announcer summed it up best after accidentally leaving his mic on.“Ughhhhhhh,” he moaned, snapping the assembled media out their slumber. It was the lowest-scoring game in Super Bowl history, eclipsing a 21-point snoozer in 1973 when Miami capped its perfect season with an ugly victory over Washington that had least had a bit of comic relief: kicker Garo Yepremian’s ridiculous attempt to throw a pass. ‘We are too hospitable,’ says Sotto amid SEA Games woes LATEST STORIES Reliable as ever, Patriots’ Julian Edelman wins Super Bowl MVP Oil plant explodes in Pampanga town Don’t miss out on the latest news and information.
