Momentum is with the Proteas: Amla

first_img26 February 2014 South Africa will carry vital momentum into the third test against Australia in Cape Town starting this weekend, Proteas batsman Hashim Amla said in an interview on Tuesday. After being thrashed by 281 runs in the first test in Centurion, Graeme Smith and company bounced back with a 231-run victory in only four days in Port Elizabeth in the second test that ended last weekend. The Proteas’ victory over Australia at St George’s Park was one of the most memorable fight-backs he had been a part of, said Amla.Fight-backs “Over the last few years we’ve had quite a few fight-backs,” he explained. “I say fight-backs to win the test, as well as fight-backs to hold on to the draw, like the matches at The Wanderers and Adelaide. Over the last few years there have been some really memorable test matches, and this last one is one of them because we came out on top.” The win in Port Elizabeth was all the more remarkable because Wayne Parnell was lost to the bowling attack after only 8.3 overs due to an injury. Now the Proteas head to Newlands, which has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for them.Newlands The last time South Africa lost at the Cape Town ground was way back in March 2006, when they went down to Australia. Since then they have won eight and drawn three at Newlands. Those results include victory by an innings and 20 runs over the Aussies in 2009 and a remarkable eight-wicket win in late 2011 after being skittled for only 96 in their first innings. That was followed by Australia being bowled out for just 47, which included 5 for 15 from Vernon Philander on his debut.‘We have momentum’ “Newlands has been a happy ground for the Proteas over the last few years, but Australia is a good team,” Amla said. “There is a lot riding on the last game, and fortunately we have momentum and that is what we are going to try and take carefully into the match. Going into the last test, it will be important to assess the conditions as soon as we can. Looking back, he added: “Players got hundreds and the bowlers bowled well, it’s a better situation to be in going in one-all, having won the second test.” Test batting rankings Amla is back to second in the test batting rankings, trailing only AB de Villiers, whose mark of 935 points is tied for the tenth best of all time and equal highest with Jacques Kallis for the best by a South African. Amla’s unbeaten 127 in Port Elizabeth was his 21st test century, which equalled the number of centuries scored by Gary Kirsten and left Amla third on the all-time South African list of century makers, behind only Jacques Kallis (45) and Graeme Smith (27).‘I play every game like it’s my last’ “I play every game like it’s my last,” Amla said of his latest century. “I’m grateful to have reached 21 hundreds, it feels like just the other day that I started playing International cricket. It’s also great to contribute towards a winning cause, it’s the best thing when you score runs and your team wins.” The third test at Newlands starts on Saturday, 1 March. first_imgAllardyce responds to Everton boss Silva swipe: It wasn’t personal!by Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Everton boss Sam Allardyce has responded to a swipe from Blues manager Marco Silva.Allardyce urged Silva to sway from his ‘attractive’ style of football after the Toffees suffered defeats to Brighton, Tottenham and Leicester over the festive period, prompting a backlash from his Goodison Park successor in a press conference.“I don’t expect him to listen to me!” Allardyce told talkSPORT.“I was generalising about Everton overall, I wasn’t having a pop at Marco Silva.“I was saying that in the end, look at the previous four managers of Everton, including myself – all of them have been dismissed for one reason or another.“Marco Silva hasn’t yet, but pressure on him will depend on where they are in the league and winning football matches.“The press man who asked the question probably didn’t put it how I said it in that interview.”Allardyce also remarked: “I think you play out from the back when it suits you, and if you doesn’t suit you, you don’t play out from the back.“Everton is the only place where results haven’t given me time to go and do a better job than I did last season.“At the end of the day, it wasn’t my team. I inherited that team.“I was doing the best I could with the tools I had available. Moving on from there, they’ve spent a lot of money again, and where will they end up this season? That’s building expectation by the amount of money they spent.“I think there’s only four players that played when I was there, all the others are new players that were brought in this season.“The players themselves have got to find out about each other as they play every week and maybe that’s why they aren’t getting the results that the Everton fans would expect.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Videos: Iowa’s Adam Woodbury Has Become College Basketball’s Eye Poker

first_imgHerky the Hawk performs during game.INDIANAPOLIS, IN – MARCH 10: Herky the hawk, mascot for the Iowa Hawkeyes performs against the Michigan State Spartans during the first round of the 2011 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 10, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Michigan State won 66-61. (Photo by Chris Chambers/Getty Images)Something needs to be done about Adam Woodbury, Big Ten. During the first half of Iowa’s game against Maryland Sunday afternoon, the Hawkeyes’ big man poked Terrapins’ freshman guard Melo Trimble in the eye. Trimble collapsed to the floor and had to leave the game for several minutes as his eye swelled up. No foul was called during the action, but the referees charged Woodbury with a Flagrant 1 after looking at the replay. It’s possible this specific incident was not an intentional play from Woodbury, but that seems unlikely since the 7-footer has done this before. During Iowa’s game against Wisconsin, he did it twice. This is happening far too many times for it to be unintentional. Some type of punishment – a suspension, perhaps – needs to be given to Woodbury from Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany.last_img read more

(Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)Michigan fans are still pretty pumped about the hiring of former Wolverines quarterback Jim Harbaugh as head coach. One has chosen a rather interesting way to convey that excitement. A Twitter user who goes by the name of Mark the Nomad has gotten a tattoo that pays homage to Harbaugh’s 1994 appearance on the television show Saved By The Bell. No, really.Mark claims that he’s received the most negative feedback from Columbus, Ohio. That doesn’t surprise anyone.I have a very important announcement to make.— Mark (@MarktheNomad) April 4, 2015I want all of you to stop what you’re doing and look.— Mark (@MarktheNomad) April 4, 2015So, this just happened: #GoBlue pic.twitter.com/jqlqyDoFsM— Mark (@MarktheNomad) April 4, 2015A huge thanks to those who donated to the tattoo fund on GoFundMe. I certainly didn’t think it’d pick up traction the way it did.— Mark (@MarktheNomad) April 4, 2015I had the best tattoo artist, IMHO, on the planet. If you’re in the Sarasota area, hell if you’re in Florida, go see Caitlin at Trap Ink.— Mark (@MarktheNomad) April 4, 2015You may be shocked to learn that most of the negative feedback I’ve received is via Columbus, Ohio.— Mark (@MarktheNomad) April 4, 2015If we’re being honest, it’s actually some high-quality ink. That being said, he’s probably going to get tired of explaining it to everyone he ever meets.last_img read more

Among mounting distresses

first_imgModi is not tired of claiming that the country is in safe hands. But the fact is just otherwise. India is in the hands of a person who has a very narrow and skewed vision of future India. Modi has been claiming to strengthen the financial condition of the farmers and for their growth, he has even planned for a gift of Rs 6000 every year. His economic advisors have been busy projecting it as a real economic booster instead of being a mere populist move merely aimed at gaining votes. Also Read – A special kind of bondNotwithstanding Modi’s claim to care for farmers and peasants, his action unravels the truth that he has ignored them to lurch. This fact is simply endorsed by the sharp rise in the demand for work under the NREGA which was highest in the 2018-19 fiscal. Obviously, the question arises; why was it highest? NREGA is certainly not the index of prosperity. It is a known fact demand for unskilled work under NREGA is a symptom of agricultural distress in rural India. The rising demand logically points to the fact the situation of the rural poor is systematically deteriorating. It also underlines that there is already agricultural distress which is forcing the people to depend on NREGA. This also points to the fact that job crisis has deepened tremendously. Also Read – Insider threat managementModi’s hatred and contempt towards rural poor could be understood from the simple fact that in 2015, instead of taking NREGA as an effective instrument to fight poverty, he described it as a “testimony to the failure of previous Congress government”. At one stage he had contemplated abandoning it. “The last five years have witnessed deliberate undermining of the Act, by allocating insufficient funds, not meeting the fund demand on time, delays in wage payments and thereby suppressing work demand”. The NREGA Sangharsh Morcha said at least 88,000 crore should have been allotted towards the programme in the last five years. In February this year, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said the country’s “jobless growth was fast slipping into job-loss growth”. Workers from 50 districts in nine states – Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat – protested and tried to lodge FIRs at nearly 150 police stations. It is ironical that a government which has huge money to fund bullet trains and to compensate banks after being looted by big business has no money to pay workers who have done their fair share of work and are now awaiting their wages. The most shameful act of the government was the reply of Modi to the Motion of Thanks to the president’s address in Lok Sabha in March 2015 that he would keep the pet scheme of the Congress NREGA alive as a “living monument” of poverty. Budgets for the scheme were decreased; the gram sabhas were not being allowed to decide the asset creation work and wages much lower than minimum wages were being paid. All this is being done so that no one remains interested in the scheme. Lower allocation has also meant lower amounts in the hands of the states and as such five states now have negative balances and therefore unable to allocate work under NREGA. Telangana had sought 18 crore person-days but got only 8 crore person-days from the Centre.” Obviously for Modi NREGA has no relevance as it failed to serve the interest of the rich and corporate people. But this small amount is of much value for the poor. Chosen for the IAS, small girl Sreedhanya proudly narrates how the rural job scheme made it possible. Sreedhanya’s achievement in Wayanad is the proud gift of NREGA. It falsifies the claim of Modi that NREGA has failed. It is, in fact, evidence that the job scheme was working. The first tribal woman from Kerala to qualify for the IAS told that her parents were beneficiaries of the NREGA. She also said her parents had educated their two children with the money they earned from the rural job guarantee scheme. Modi is anti-rural poor is primarily confirmed by his action of reducing the manpower base of the NREGA. BJP and Sangh parivar are not tired of accusing the previous governments of not doing anything for eradicating poverty. But the fact remains he has not done anything precious to eradicate poverty. It was envisaged that NREGA would be broad-based to fight poverty. Ironically, instead of broadening the beneficiary base, Modi’s obsession has forced his government to chop it that too in the election year.
