“Dull Christmas for us” – rice farmers

first_imgOver 300 rice farmers in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and from the island of Wakenaam in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) flocked the gate of the Hack Rice Mill in Golden Fleece, Essequibo Coast demanding their payments.Farmers are concerned over the long delay in receiving payment from millers for paddy purchased since September and some even earlier this year. After a commotion erupted in front of the main gate of the rice factory, its management was forced to meet with the frustrated rice farmers.According to the farmers, they were there as early as 06:00h on Friday and were trying to get the attention of senior management of the rice complex but no one was willing to speak with them. One farmer said the group decided to protest and make noise outside the entity as they demanded to see the manager for their payments. The owed farmers said the manger eventually met with them and agreed to give them payments between $50,000 and $100,000 until full payments are available. The farmers said they have their monthly bank installment to meet and the cash given to them in some cases cannot even meet the required payment.Speaking with Guyana Times, a mother who was also outside the factory protesting, said it is not easy for her to financially manage her home. She said she has to finance her children’s education, which is a very expensive exercise. One is at one the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), one is at the University of Guyana, and the other is writing the Caribbean Examination Council next year. Some of the other women who were also on the protest line said they are single parents and are depending only on their meagre earnings from the rice industry for their survival. “It will be a dull, dull Christmas for us,” one woman said.last_img read more

Kindle Sales Outstrip Hard Covers

first_imgTags:#Amazon#E-Books#web Related Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Amazonannounced today that its sales of e-books for its Kindle reader have passed those of hard cover books. Over the past three months, according to Amazon, it has sold 143 Kindle books for every 100 hardbacks; over the past month the ratio is 1.8:1. Unfortunately, the company did not provide overall figures for those time periods. The press release containing this information was really focused on the theme, “New $189 Price Results in Tipping Point for Growth.” Amazon has been in a price war with another e-reader manufacturer, Barnes & Noble. The Kindle also faces competition from Borders, which has its own e-readers, and of course with the iPad. Though the Kindle iPad app may take some of the sting out of the competition. If the growth rate represented is accurate, this may a good indication that the reduction of the Kindle’s price from $259 to $189 a month ago helped spur sales. The relative ascendancy of the e-book over the hardcover, however, though interesting, doesn’t prove much – certainly not that the e-reader war is won. curt hopkinscenter_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Here at Microsoft, we’re working hard to secure, simplify, and democratize IoT so that every customer can transform business, and the world at large, with connected solutions. This is why Microsoft has committed $5 billion to IoT over the next four years. While IoT offers companies across industries a wealth of powerful benefits, the reality of implementation poses serious considerations such as security, complexity and scalability–not to mention keeping up with all the innovations flooding the market. In the run up to the IoT in Action kickoff event for FY18 (where you’ll definitely learn more), I’d like to briefly touch on some key areas to consider when preparing to build out your IoT solution. Make security intentional with Azure SphereDid you know that more than 9 billion microcontroller units (MCU) are deployed each year? From a risk standpoint, that’s 9 billion more opportunities for compromised security. Which means, making end-to-end security a priority from the start is a top priority. Recently, as part of our commitment to secure IoT, Microsoft introduced Azure Sphere, which is the industry’s first holistic platform for providing security for MCU devices. Azure Sphere combines cloud security, a secured OS, and a secured MCU to protect and power devices at the intelligent edge. It also fully addresses what Microsoft has identified as The Seven Properties of Highly-Secure Devices.Azure Sphere enables MCU manufacturers to build highly secure devices that are protected through their connection to the Azure Sphere Security Service. Designed for efficiency, Azure Sphere comes with Visual Studio tools that streamline development and can connect quickly to Azure or another public or private cloud of your choice. Hope I am lucky enough to get Arjuna this time: Yuvraj

first_imgYuvraj Singh , who has recovered from a rare germ cell cancer, feels “honoured” that the BCCI has again sent his nomination for the prestigious Arjuna award and is hoping that he will be more lucky this time.”It’s an honour that BCCI has nominated my name for the Arjuna Award. This is the second time that my name has been nominated and I hope that I am lucky enough to get it,” Yuvraj told mediapersons at the launch of the “YouWeCan” — an initiative by Yuvraj Singh Foundation, to spread awareness about cancer detection. The BCCI has decided to nominate Yuvraj for the award .Incidentally, the BCCI’s decision came after a miscommunication with the Sports Ministry regarding the last date for filing the nomination form. The BCCI had alleged that they did not have an intimation about the nomination like earlier years, a claim which was strongly refuted by the Sports Ministry. However a couple of days back, the Joint Secretary in the Sports Ministry Mukul Chatterjee called up at the BCCI office to inform about the date of nomination being extended till July 20.Although Virat Kohli has been a standout performer last year, the BCCI has decided to nominate Yuvraj’s name since he is one of the seniormost cricketers who is yet to receive the award. His contemporaries like Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Gautam Gambhir have all received the award.last_img read more

Privacy experts Focus on controlling damage caused by data collection

first_img Comment 1 Share your voice You’re not going to stop the collection of your personal information. That’s the bad news. Companies and governments are finding more points of data to harvest about your daily life, and they’re going to keep doing it.Despite that, a group of privacy experts from organizations including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union said there’s hope. Speaking at the Oktane19 conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, they called for a change in tactics: advocate for better laws and technologies that keep data collection from hurting you.”We probably are unable to stop the amount of collection in an effective manner,” said Kurt Opsahl, deputy executive director and general counsel at the EFF. “The answer is to use tools so that creates less harm.”One of these tools could be regulation that gives consumers more rights over their data, like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. The law counters the trend of companies collecting whatever data they want on you and storing it indefinitely, because it puts them at risk of financial penalties if hackers steal the data or if it’s misused, said Jon Callas, senior technology fellow at the ACLU. Security Data privacycenter_img Tags It also means thinking about the unexpected ways data from long ago, which Callas calls “data sludge,” could be used against you.Marc Rogers, an executive director focused on cybersecurity at Okta, the event’s sponsor, agreed. For example, he said, connected cars like the Tesla collect information about drivers’ movements for the entire life of the car. What happens to that data if the car goes to the junkyard or auction house, he asked.”If you told me years ago I’d be living in a world where I’d have to be careful disposing of my light bulb because it contains my Wi-Fi password, I’d have thought you were crazy,” Rogers said. The answer to this problem could be technological, with product makers coming up with ways to limit the data exposed at the end of a device’s life cycle.Technical fixes to other problems are emerging but need to become more widespread, said Sara-Jayne Terp, a data scientist who focuses on stopping coordinated misinformation campaigns. As an example of a success, she cited the campaign of Emmanuel Macron for blocking the efforts of hackers and trolls before France’s presidential election in 2017.”We’re not all doomed,” she said. “We just have a lot of work to do.” These Android apps have been tracking you, even when you say stop The majority of scooters in LA are going to share your location with the city Hacking Privacylast_img read more
