first_imgShare CONTACT: Philip Montgomery PHONE:(713) 831-4792E-MAIL: [email protected] MCPHERSON TO DELIVER ‘CIVIL WAR’ LECTURE ATRICERenowned Civil War historian JamesMcPherson will discuss “Drawn With the Sword: Reflections on the American CivilWar” on March 16 in the sixth and final speech of the 1998-99 Rice UniversityPresident’s Lecture Series.McPherson, the George Henry Davis Professor of American Historyat Princeton University, has penned 11 books and numerous essays, scholarlyarticles and reviews, including the highly acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning “Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era.” In researching “What They FoughtFor: 1861&endash;1865” and “For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought the CivilWar,” McPherson delved into 25,000 letters and 250 diaries written bysoldiers.His most recent work, “Drawn with the Sword: Reflections on theAmerican Civil War,” is a collection of essays in which he poses fundamentalquestions about the war and writes portraits of the war’s great leaders.
