The sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has cast its young version of Albus Dumbledore, Variety reports. The role will be played by Jude Law, who could conceivably grow old to be either Richard Harris or Michael Gambon. I guess. Put a white beard on him, and we’ll see which actor he resembles more. In any case, not much else is known about the movie other than the fact that Eddie Redmayne will reprise his role for the sequel and David Yates will direct again. Also, Johnny Depp will appear opposite Law, playing Gellert Grindelwald.According to Entertainment Weekly, Yates put out a statement regarding the casting of Law, calling him a phenomenally talented actor he’s admired for some time. “I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him,” Yates said. “I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”Michael Gambon as a younger Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. (Photo: Screenshot via YouTube/Warner Bros.)The movie will take place before Dumbledore’s days as Hogwarts’ headmaster when he was a professor of Transfiguration. He has dealings with Grindelwald, a dark wizard who believes Wizards to be superior to muggles. If the hints at this time period in the Harry Potter books are anything to go by, Dumbledore did some things he isn’t proud of during this time period. J.K. Rowling has also said that Dumbledore had romantic feelings for Grindelwald. Sadly for him, they aren’t reciprocated. Poor Albus. Here’s hoping he meets a nice boy at some point during this series.Law is a fine choice for the role, and I have no doubt he’ll be able to play all sides of Albus Dumbledore. He can naturally appear wise, tender and goofy, which is who the character is when we meet him in the Harry Potter series. After Law’s performance in HBO’s not-great-but-fun-as-hell The Young Pope, I can confidently predict he’ll be able to pull off the intimidating aspects of Dumbledore as well. Law will be the third actor to play Dumbledore, and I can’t wait to see his interpretation of the character.
