Last Friday, it was reported that Legendary Pictures was seeking the film rights to a live-action Pokémon film. Now, it has been announced that the film studio will be partnering with the Pokémon Company to make the Pokémon movie a reality. What’s most interesting of all is that the film will be based on the Detective Pikachu character. For those who don’t know, Detective Pikachu is an odd Pokémon that has the ability to speak. He isn’t as powerful as others of his kind, but he is smarter than them. He uses his brains to solve crimes with a human friend named Tim Goodman. The game was released in Japan this past February but has yet to be launched elsewhere around the world.Given the insane popularity of Pokémon Go, Legendary Pictures is fast-tracking this film for production in 2017. Universal Pictures will distribute the film worldwide while Toho will distribute it in Japan. The choice to go with a Detective Pikachu film is interesting since it isn’t the usual type of Pokémon story that people have come to know. One would have thought that a live-action Pokémon movie would focus on a group of friends who travel the world with their respective pocket monsters to do battle with others. A Detective Pikachu movie will no doubt have other types of Pokémon in it, but the focus will be on the titular character and his human friend solving mysteries. With production starting next year, don’t expect this movie to be released any time soon. In the meantime, perhaps we should petition Hollywood to cast Danny DeVito as Detective Pikachu?
