first_imgIt takes a Donegal man to beat off a savage shark – with his bare hands!Irish-Australian pro-surfer Mick Fanning has hit headlines around the world after he fended off the fearsome beast while taking part in a competition in South Africa. Mick’s father John is from Malin Head and emigrated to Australia in the 1970s.The surfing star, 34, is proud of his Irish roots and has the Fanning coat of arms tattooed on his left arm and has visited the Inishowen Peninsula in recent years.The dramatic footage of Mick shows him paddling out to take part in the J-Bay Surfing Open when all of a sudden a huge fin appears.The shark can then be seen attacking Mick as he attempts to battle desperately to get back on his board. Mick said: “I just saw fins. I just punched it in the back. I felt something grab, get stuck in my leg rope and instantly jumped away.
